Question Answer

What is SARCAN Recycling?

SARCAN Recycling is the recycling division of the Saskatchewan Association of Rehabilitation Centres (SARC).    SARCAN was created in 1988 when SARC was awarded the exclusive contract with the Government of Saskatchewan to recycle used beverage containers across the province.  Over time, SARCAN has expanded to recycle additional materials, and we look forward to what the future might hold in environmental initiatives.

Does SARCAN accept other containers, such as food tins, glass jars, and plastic containers?

No, SARCAN cannot accept such containers.  SARCAN is contracted with the Government of Saskatchewan to recycle most non-refillable beverage containers, and funding and any related charges as a result of Government legislation (i.e., environmental handling charges) are tied to those legislated containers – SARCAN is funded for ¾ of its budget by the environmental handling charges on every beverage sold.  Other containers (i.e., plastic margarine tubs, food tins, glass jars, laundry detergent bottles, etc.) are not legislated; therefore, SARCAN would be expected to cover the costs to recycle these products.  As there currently is no market for such containers, SARCAN cannot recover the costs of recycling, so it cannot accept these products.

Where can I recycle items that SARCAN cannot accept?

Visit the Saskatchewan Waste Reduction Council’s website search directory, Where to Recycle in Saskatchewan.

Is SARCAN a work experience program for persons with disabilities?

No, SARCAN is real work for real pay.  SARCAN employees receive competitive wages as well as a benefit and pension plan.

SARCAN is a business which holds the exclusive contract with the Government of Saskatchewan to recycle used beverage containers across the province.  This multi-million dollar obligation requires hundreds of competent employees to work at real jobs.  We are proud to extend the responsibility of real employment to persons with disabilities.

As SARCAN expands with new initiatives such as milk containers, used paint, and obsolete electronics, so to does our workforce, and we look forward to SARCAN’s future growth and opportunities for employment.

What are SARCAN’s “Three Es”?

At SARCAN, we are very proud of our “Three Es”:

  • Environmental Protection – on average, SARCAN recycles over 300 million beverage containers each year, which keeps 18,000 tonnes of waste out of Saskatchewan landfills
  • Economic Development – each year, SARCAN returns over $35 million in deposit refunds to the people of Saskatchewan, and almost 90% of our $18 million operating budget is spent in Saskatchewan
