Brief Organization Description: The Prince Albert and District Community Service Centre provides a wide range of social services for Prince Albert residents and has done so since its formation in 1968. The mission of this organization is: “The Prince Albert and District Community Service Centre provides quality services to meet community need focusing on employment, transportation and recycling." The agency began as a single program agency delivering financial assistance to the citizens in need in the City of Prince Albert and the Rural Municipality of Prince Albert. In the early 1970s, the staff, along with the Board of Directors, began identifying other service needs in the community that were required in order to assist these recipients in better meeting their needs. This service needs identification resulted in the development of the Life Skills program, which began operation in 1971; the Work Preparation Centre and the Home Services Program started in 1975; along with Pine Industries which began at that time as well. Finally, the Community Service Centre Budget Counselling program began its operations April 1, 1979. As of July 1, 1989, the Department of Social Services amalgamated the financial assistance unit that had been operated by the Prince Albert and District Community Service Centre and this unit became a part of the Department of Social Services. This now leaves the Centre with the Life Skills Program, which is called The Personal Employment Readiness Centre; the Work Preparation Centre; the Budget Counselling Program; the Seniors Transportation Program; Second Stage Housing and the Special Needs Transportation program. When the agency was formed in 1968, it was established as a society which since then has had its registration transferred to the Non-Profit Corporations Act. As such, it exists as a charitable corporation and currently has seven Board Members, with one City appointment vacant. Four members are elected from the membership and four are appointed by City Council.
Specific Programs Offered: The Centre operates Pine Industries which is primarily the operation of the two SARCAN depots in Prince Albert. In addition to Pine Industries, the Centre also operates the Prince Albert Supported Employment project under the auspices of the Employment Network Initiative (ENI), Special Needs Transportation, Seniors Transportation, the Work Preparation Centre, Budget Counselling, and the Steps to Employment project. Finally, the Centre continues to pursue funding to continue the work of the Transitions service, which is not in operation at this time.
