Brief Organization Description:

In 1959, a group of parents formed what is now known as the Saskatchewan Association of Community Living.  This group of parents moved an old school house to Kindersley which was known as the Penner School, to provide an program for their children.

As the students became young adults, they required more appropriate opportunities.  At this time the Smith farm near Eatonia was purchased which provided both a residential facility and a small workshop. In 1972, the residents moved from the Smith farm to the Ryder farm located on the east side of Kindersley.  Here they grew a large garden each year, looked after a variety of farm animals and took responsibility for the care of the building and grounds.

1980 saw the opening of the first separate residential facility in the town of Kindersley.  Then in 1981, the Activity Centre was constructed and donated to West Central Industries by the Kinsmen Foundation.  At this time, the main vocational activities were wedding decorations, wood work and wire salvaging.

A second residential facility was purchased in 1988.  During this year several people moved from Valley View Centre in Moose Jaw to West Central Industries.  Also during this time a Supportive Independent Living Program was started; it operated in a suite in the lower level of the new house.

A SARCAN Depot was opened in 1988 providing employment for persons with and without disabilities under the supervision of a manager.

West Central Industries’ third residential facility was built in 1990 to accommodate the additional people moving out of Valley View to the community.  The following year, Saskatchewan Housing built another house to replace the house that was purchased in 1980.

In 1995, a resident who was in the SIL Suite was able to move into his own apartment in the community, allowing another resident to have the opportunity to take part in the SIL program and live on his own in the suite.  Also in 1995, a Residential Day Program was started to accommodate the needs of several residents who because of their disability, age or level of care no longer enjoyed coming to the Activity Centre.  The Program operates from Group Home 3 and focuses on developing the residents’ life skills, quality of life and community involvement.

In 1996, West Central Industries purchased a Waste Management business.  With much support from the business community, this venture has proven successful in providing employment for both community members and the residents of West Central Industries.

In 2006, the agency changed its name to West Central Abilities Inc.

Specific Programs Offered: Residential services with three group homes, an activity centre that has recreational activities as well as vocational training and contracts, supported independent living, waste management business, oil recycling, recycling program and a SARCAN depot.
